Make 2017 Great with Goal Setting!
"I want to lose 10 pounds"
"I’m going to be more organized"
"I am going to get a new job"
These are all very typical goals people set as they ring in the New Year. It’s such a great time to declare a new goal: it’s a New Year, new month, new week. It seems anything is possible once that ball drops into the New Year.
However, what happens after the last confetti falls and the grind of the days starts back up? Frequently by the end of January, most have given up on their goals and have gone back to their old ways.
Want to make sure your goals are achieved in 2017?
Why do you want it?: First, understand the “why” behind your desire to make the change or set the goal. Is it to become a better person? Provide a better life for your family? Get specific! For instance, don’t just say “I want to provide a better lifestyle for my children”, rather say “I want to change jobs so I my higher salary will allow me to send my children to a private school”.
Set realistic, attainable goals: For example, setting a goal of “getting a new job” might not be immediately attainable, as there are many factors beyond your control. Perhaps setting a goal of revamping your resume, applying for 5 jobs a week or attending one networking session a month will be more realistic and easier to reach.
Start small: Set a small goal to reach in a shorter amount of time. For instance, if your goal is to lose a considerable amount of weight, consider setting a small weight loss goal for January. Or simply set a goal to get to the gym at least 3 days a week. Then at the end of the month, evaluate how you are doing and if you are on track.
Write it down: The simple act of writing something down makes you more likely to get it done. This means not only electronically, but on paper as well.
Keep yourself accountable: Grab a friend and ask that they check in with you to see how you are doing on your goals. Make a to-do list and check-in with yourself daily or weekly to measure your progress.
Use a coach: That’s right; a coach is an invaluable tool to help you clarify, set and obtain your goals. Your coach becomes your sounding board and your accountability partner.
